A Whole Lotta Hostas

Well, eventually there will be a whole lotta hostas. For now, there are three:

Hostas, as far as I'm concerned, are the perfect landscape plant. They love shade (every well-landscaped yard has plenty of shade), they have flowers (albeit short-lived, small ones) and they make everything around them look wonderful. The large leaves contrast wonderfully with other, smaller-leaved plants. See the astilbe in the first picture? It's also known as false spirea, but it looks pretty trustworthy to me, so I'll just call it astilbe. Those itty-bitty  little leaves contrast beautifully with the hosta. And the astilbe has slightly showier flowers, so it's a given that we'd put them together!

My yard has some serious non-shady areas, though. Almost the entire yard is not shady. Hooray, you say! Lots of sun for bright colored plants! Yes, true. However, it's very sunny in the Rockies. Very. So shade is what I want, mostly. Maybe that's why we planted upwards of 10 trees last year! Hopefully one day, we will have a shady yard. Which is why I'm starting hostas now.

By the time we have some serious shade, we'll also have some hostas in need of dividing...and places to put them!
